Monthly Archives: April 2011

I’ve revised my title from “web designer” to “web developer.” The web designers out there have degrees in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, and I know I can’t compete with that. I know the theory and can put together an inoffensive site, but I don’t have the gift for visual inspiration to bump it up to Web 2.0. I am really all about the code. I know (or can find out) how to make the pretty do what you want it to do.

PHP has distracted the hell out of me lately. I’m ripping apart one of my student sites to see if I can duplicate the assignment without the JavaScript. It’s so much fun!

No, not quite. I think I would go into withdrawal if I do that for more than one day (evening) a week. But I have been doing a lot of reading in the past few weeks, not all of it online. I wanted to gain at least some fundamental knowledge of server-side stuff and need to get more comfortable working with the DOM. I’m at the point with JavaScript/jQuery where, if it was a verbal language, I would understand the grammar (syntax) and could form simple phrases, but don’t have enough vocabulary to have a spontaneous conversation. I don’t like feeling that shaky.

I need to get back to coding, though. Have to keep using the HTML/CSS vocabulary.
